All jokes aside, lash serums, although they are a splurge beauty product, are truly worth every penny.
Whether you're new to the world of lash serums, or a little confused about how they work, in this article you'll learn exactly how to apply lash serum effortlessly (+the mistakes to avoid at all costs).
This post is all about how to apply lash serum to achieve longer, voluminous lashes.
What is Lash Serum?
A lash serum is a beauty product that enhances your natural eyelashes, making them appear longer and more voluminous. Lash serums contain highly concentrated ingredients like hyaluronic acid, biotin, and castor oil that work to improve the hair growth process for stronger, longer lashes that last.
Most lash serums are packaged in a tube with a thin applicator used to apply the product along the root of your upper lash line.
What does Lash Serum do?
Far all the haters out there that think lash serums are just a waste of money, I'm walking, living proof they are a godsent. Trust me when I say my lashes have never looked better!
Here are some of the specific benefits lash serums do to enhance your lashes.
Adds Volume & Length
The obvious benefit, lash serums (with consistent application!) add volume and length to your lashes. There's something magical about having extremely long, feathery natural eyelashes without having to spend 20 minutes putting on falsies.
Therefore, a significant benefit of lash serums is it is a natural way to at home grow your lashes for noticeable results as quick as just 1 month after starting.
Note: You can even apply your lash serum to your eyebrows to promote brow hair growth if you want!
Nourishes
Lash serums also hydrate and nourish each lash. This ensures you are growing long & STRONG lashes that last. The last thing you want to do is have long, damaged eyelashes that constantly fall out.
How to Apply Lash Serum in 7 Steps
It's easy to make applying lash serum a part of your nightly skin care routine. Follow these 7 simple steps to get your lash growing journey underway.
1. Wash Your Hands and Face (+ Remove ALL Makeup)
Before applying any product, you need to ensure your hands and face are spotless. This includes removing all face and eye makeup, cleansing your face, and applying your moisturizer.
The goal is to make applying your lash serum the last step of your skin care routine so the product can thoroughly absorb into your lashes, without interruption.
2. Remove Contacts
Next, if you wear contacts & are about to apply lash serum right before bed, remove your contacts. This will ensure you don't wipe off any product while trying to remove your contacts.
3. Use Product Sparingly
A little goes a long way with lash serum. Therefore, use only a small amount of product sparingly as the formula is highly concentrated.
Adding more product than necessary will only waste the product and your money, and WILL NOT help your lashes grow any faster. Thus, for your wallet's sake, use the product sparingly.
4. Apply Lash Serum Along Root Of Upper Lash Line
Now onto the good stuff! Take the applicator and apply the lash serum along the root of the upper lash line.
Ensure you are applying the product across the entirety of the lash line. And again, you don't need to apply multiple coats of the serum, only apply one coat.
5. Repeat On Other Eye
Repeat this step on your other eye. Making sure you again 1) use the product sparingly 2) stroke the applicator along the entirety of the upper lash line root.
6. Wait for Product To Dry
Then, wait for the product to dry (1-2 minutes). Obviously, avoid rubbing your eyes as this can rub off the product.
Likewise, DO NOT apply product to the root of your lower lash line. When you blink, the product from the upper lash line will naturally transfer onto your lower lashes to help them grow too!
7. Consistently Apply Daily
Consistency is key to achieving longer lashes with lash serum. You won't see overnight success, and that's okay. Don't give up, use the product once a day-- preferably as part of your night routine right before you go to sleep.
You should start seeing results by about the one month mark if you use the product once a day.
How long does lash serum take to work?
You should start seeing noticeable results within one month of starting the lash serum.
However, it's essential you use the product each and every day as intended. It's essential to realize your lashes won't ~magically~ grow noticeably longer overnight.
Trust me, the one month is worth the wait! After the one month, depending how long your lashes are, if you want to keep growing them, continue using the serum once per day.
However, if you find your lashes have grown too long, stop using the serum daily and use only a couple times per week to maintain your length, without going overboard on the lash growth.
Mistakes To Avoid When Applying Lash Serum
Avoid these common lash serum mistakes to save your hard-earned $$$ and start seeing lash growth results fast.
Applying Too Much Product
Applying coats upon coats of lash serum will generate the same results as if you only applied one coat of product.
Therefore, to make your lash serum last so you don't have to buy a new one every month, apply the product sparingly & use only one coat on each eye.
Never Apply to Lower Lash Line
NEVER, I repeat, NEVER apply lash serum to your lower lash line.
This is because the product can block your eye ducts or get into your eye and cause redness and irritation.
When you apply the product only to your upper lash line, when you blink, a little product will naturally spread onto your lower lashes giving them just enough product to grow, without any watery eyes involved.
Still Having Makeup on your Face
The reason why it's recommended you apply your lash serum right before bed is to ensure there's nothing on your face OR you won't be applying anything on your face after the serum.
If you apply lash serum first, then cleanse your face & remove your makeup, this will rub off the lash serum product you just applied... making it not as effective.
Meanwhile, if you apply the lash serum in the morning, then apply a face full of makeup afterwards, this also will interfere with the product before it has had ample time to absorb into your lashes.
Skipping Days
With almost anything in life, consistency and routine is paramount. The same goes with applying lash serum. It's essential you apply the lash serum once per day.
Therefore, try to make your lash serum part of your nightly routine so you are more likely to remember to apply the serum right before bed, which will reduce your risk of skipping days.
Best Lash Serums... that actually work
Lash serums aren't cheap. That being said, some work better than others. Here are the top lash serums I've used that have helped me grow my lashes.
This product was the first lash serum I've ever tried. It truly works wonders at growing your lashes for noticeably longer, stronger eyelashes.
That being said, it comes at a hefty price tag: $155.
Although the product can last anywhere from 4-6 months, this most definitely is one of the more expensive lash serums.
2. Grande Lash: Lash Enhancing Serum
If you are looking for the same quality as Rodan + Field's Lash Boost, without the price, Grande Lash is for you. At just $68, Grande Lash provides longer-looking lashes for noticeable results.
I personally use Grande Lash currently and am OBSESSED. Although you do get less product than the R + F Lash Boost, it provides the same results for significantly less money.
Frequently Asked Questions
How to apply lash serum to bottom lashes?
NEVER apply lash serum to your bottom lash line. You should only be applying lash serum along the root of your upper lash line.
Then, when you blink, a little product from your upper lash line will spread to your lower lashes, giving them just enough to grow too.
If you do apply lash serum directly to your bottom lashes, you risk getting it into your eyes and causing unwanted irritation.
Can I use lash serum with lash extensions?
Yes! Lash serum is safe to use with lash extensions. Just be sure to use a lash serum without oil & wait a day or two after getting your lash extensions to start using the lash serum.
What are the side effects of lash serum?
There are various side effects that can occur while using a lash serum.
Common side effects of lash serum include:
- Red, dry, itchy eyes.
- Swelling or irritation of the eyelid.
- Allergic reaction to the serum.
It's important to understand that mild irritation, especially when first starting out using the lash serum is common. Therefore, if you do feel a small burning/tingling sensation, and you're just starting to use a lash serum for the first time, don't freak out.
However, if you experience swelling or an allergic reaction to the product, stop using the product immediately and seek medical attention asap.
