*Top Simple Makeup Routine For Beginners*
Basic Makeup Products For Beginners
Before you dive into learning about how to achieve simple makeup for everyday, it’s important to learn about these basic makeup products for beginners. Every simple makeup routine for beginners starts with a complete understanding of these makeup essentials.
Face Makeup Products
Foundation
Think of foundation as the base of your makeup. There are three different types of foundation: liquid, cream, and powder. Depending upon how much coverage you want in your foundation will determine what type of foundation you want. Our personal favorite that we use is a liquid foundation. This is because it’s usually medium to full coverage, easy to apply, and blends well.
Concealer
Concealer is meant to cover up any blemishes, dark circles, acne, or any other type of imperfection you are looking to cover up. Similar to foundation, concealers also have varying levels of coverage.
Blush
Blush is a great way to add a bit of color to your cheeks. There are so many different shades of blush from pinks to reds to peachy tones. There are also three different types of blush types: liquid, cream, and powder.
Bronzer
Bronzer also comes in three different types: liquid, cream, and powder. Bronzer is a great product to accentuate your cheekbones and give you a more tanned, bronzed look. So if you are looking for a product that gives you a natural “I just came back from the beach” look, bronzer is for you.
Highlighter
Using a highlighter is great for showing off certain features of your face like the tip of your nose, the top of your cheekbones, and more. This is because this product gives a shine or shimmer look to a given area to essentially “highlight” that feature. Note, use sparingly as you probably don’t want your whole face to sparkle.
Setting Products
Setting products lock your look in place. After all, you don’t want all your hard work to easily wipe off and go to waste! From setting powders to setting sprays, each provides the ability to lock in place your makeup for long-lasting wear.
Eye Makeup Products
Eyeshadow
Eyeshadow is a great way to showcase your eyes and all their beauty. There are two main types of eyeshadow: cream and powder. Simply apply the eyeshadow to your eyelids to enhance your eye game. There are also various colors from neutral tones to bold blues or pinks to express your personality and style.
Eyeliner
Next, eyeliner is another way to enhance your eyes. Eyeliner comes in three different forms: gel, pencil, and liquid. The point of eyeliner is to give your eyes some definition or shape to bring more focus to the eyes. Whether you go for a cat-eye or natural eyeliner look, eyeliner truly brings out your eyes.
Mascara
Mascara is arguably one of the staple makeup product items that you cannot live without. Mascara helps make your eyelashes look fuller and longer. This makes your eyes look ~that~ much more beautiful. Often, different mascaras will give different effects from a clean simple mascara to make your lashes look longer, to a more voluminous mascara that will make your lashes thick- perfect for a full-glam look.
Eyebrow Makeup Products
Eyebrow Gel
Moving on, eyebrow gel holds your eyebrow hairs in a specific place. This is especially good if you are going for a more “clean girl” look.
Eyebrow Pencil
An eyebrow pencil gives you the ability to draw on your eyebrows. Whether you have patches or gaps in your eyebrows, or just want to make your eyebrows look fuller, an eyebrow pencil is great to naturally give the look of thicker brows by filling them in. The pencil tip provides the ability to create natural-looking strokes that look like real hairs.
Lip Makeup Products
Lip Pencil
Last but not least…lips! Starting off with the lip pencil, this product allows you to shape and outline your lips. This is great especially if you are looking to make a more plump pout by slightly overlining your lips.
Lipstick
Next, lipstick is a classic makeup product, and for good reason. Lipstick gives your lips a pop of color to showcase your style and personality. Whether you go for a bold red or a simple neutral tone, lipstick surely brings a makeup look together. Two main types of lipstick types are liquid and matte lipsticks.
Lip Gloss
Finally, if you want a more subtle lip look rather than a particular lipstick color, a lip gloss is a great simple makeup choice. A lip gloss has a glossy finish and comes in a variety of shades from pink to peachy to translucent. Therefore, just because you opt for a lip gloss doesn’t mean you have to give up on giving your lips a bit of color.
Simple Makeup For Everyday
Now that you’ve learned about the basic makeup products for beginners it’s time to get into the good stuff! Here is a simple makeup for everyday you can follow for a natural, simple makeup routine for beginners.
Clean Face
First things first, it’s essential you wash your face before applying any makeup. This makeup routine for beginners would be all for nothing without a clean, prepped face. Therefore, wash your face with a gentle cleanser. We LOVE the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser because it’s effective at washing your face. Also, this cleanser works with all skin types, and you won’t experience any annoying scents from this product.
Moisturize (Apply SPF!)
Next, another must-do before applying makeup is to moisturize and apply a facial sunscreen! These two steps are essential. First, you need to have moisturized skin to ensure your skin is nice and hydrated. Next, using sunscreen will help protect your face from the Sun throughout the day. No Sun spots, early signs of aging, or skin damage here!
However, something you might not know is that some moisturizers have SPF in them. That’s why we are OBSESSED with using the Cetaphil Face Moisturizer with SPF 35. This is because it works great as a moisturizer for combination and sensitive skin types. And, this moisturizer has SPF so your skin stays protected all day from the Sun.
Another helpful note to consider is there are tinted moisturizers with SPF. This can be a great alternative if you want to wear a light makeup look while keeping your skin hydrated and protected from the Sun. Using a tinted moisturizer is a great replacement for using a heavy foundation (to be discussed in the next section!). This is especially the case if you notice your skin frequently breakouts out from using foundation. We LOVE the Elta MD Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 44 because again it acts as a moisturizer, facial sunscreen, and gives you a bit of light coverage if you want to skip out on the foundation.{RELATED POST: Beginners Guide: Healthy Skin Care Tips}
Foundation & Concealer
First, once your face is clean and prepped, it’s time to start your simple makeup routine for beginners! Foundation is one of the fundamental steps when it comes to face makeup. As previously discussed, there are a variety of coverages of foundation. It’s important to choose a foundation shade that most closely resembles your natural skin tone. The goal of applying foundation is to cover up any and all skin imperfections, without it looking like you are wearing foundation.
Our personal favorite type of foundation is a liquid foundation. Therefore, we LOVE using the Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation. Simply, use a few drops of product on a beauty blender and evenly distribute throughout your face. Make sure you blend thoroughly and evenly apply foundation going down your neck. This will ensure your foundation looks effortless and blended together.
Next, concealer can be applied on top of your foundation wherever you need to hide any imperfections or brighten your face. Common places to apply concealer are under your eyes to cover up any dark circles and around the chin area (especially if you have any breakouts). We like using the Tarte Shape Tape Full Coverage Concealer. This is because it is full coverage and will cover even the most stubborn blemish.Bronzer, Blush, Highlighter
Next, if you are looking for some bronzed up dimension and contour to achieve a sun-kissed look, bronzer is a great makeup product to use. Simply, apply under your cheekbones to give a more defined look. Also, you can apply bronzer along your jawline and around your face (making sure you blend well with a large, fluffy makeup brush) for a bronzed look. The Hoola Bronzer by Benefit is a great bronzer.
Then, blush like the Nars blush is a great way to give your cheeks a pop of color. Using a fluffy makeup brush, apply to your cheeks and make sure to blend for a more effortless, natural look.
Third, consider using highlighter to showoff certain features. We are OBSESSED with the Becca highlighter because it gives your face a natural glow. You can truly apply highlighter anywhere to add a bit of glow and sparkle. However, use sparingly as you don’t want your entire face to be shimmering. We recommend applying along your cheekbones, tip of your nose, and/or the inner corners of your eyes to bring out your eye color.Mascara & Eye Shadow
Eye makeup is one of our favorite steps- and for good reason! You get to showoff your gorgeous eyes. Starting off with eyeshadow, you can apply the desired shadow color onto your eyelids using either your fingers or a smaller makeup brush. Make sure to blend well along the eyelid. If you are going for a natural makeup look for beginners, we highly recommend using the Naked 3 Eyeshadow Palette. This eyeshadow palette has 12 different pink and neutral shades that look soooo pretty on any eye color.
After you’ve applied your eyeshadow, mascara is another simple makeup routine for beginners must-have. We recommend curling your eyelashes with an eyelash curler first. To do so, carefully place your eyelashes between the two sections of the eyelash curler and press down for at least 10 seconds. This will lift your eyelashes up so when you apply your mascara, your lashes don’t just stick straight out.
Once you’ve curled your lashes (optional, but highly recommended!), it’s time to apply mascara. Start at the root of your lash line and flick/ swipe your mascara upwards past the tips of your eyelashes. Keep following this step to evenly distribute the mascara throughout your eyes to make your lashes full and voluminous. There are so many great mascaras that specialize in either lengthening or making your lashes look fuller. Our personal favorite is the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara because it gives you the volume and length for gorgeous lashes.Lip Products
To tie your simple makeup routine for beginners together, consider using a lip gloss or lip balm. We like using the Grande Lips Lip Plumper Gloss because it acts both as a gorgeous gloss while giving your lips a bit of a naturally plump pout. If you want an even more subtle lip look, stick with a simple lip balm to keep your lips moisturized all day long.
Set Face
Last but certainly not least, set your makeup with either a setting spray or setting powder. This will lock your makeup in place… you don’t want your hard work to go to waste! We like using a setting spray like the MAC setting spray because it’s quick and easy. Simply spray a few pumps across your completed makeup look and enjoy a long-lasting makeup look.
